Background:
Captain Douglas W. Lier USNR-Ret.:

In 1955 US Navy Ensign Doug Lier was sent to Los Alamos after sea duty in the Korean War Conflict. He was assigned to the Laboratory J-Division and deployed as a nuclear weapons officer aboard ship in the Pacific Proving Grounds of Bikini and Eniwetok Islands for the “Redwing Series” of atmospheric tests and then to the Nevada Test Site.

In 1957 he returned to Los Alamos, retired from the Navy and hired as a J- Division scientific staff member. Immediately he joined the Naval Reserve, serving as commanding officer of Naval Reserve Research Units in the areas of Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Albuquerque. He retired after 36 years of reserve duty. He served as coordinator of the Service Academy Research Associates (SARA) Program before retiring from the Laboratory in 1992.

Doug was an active leader in many Los Alamos community groups, an outstanding elite athlete and selected as a Los Alamos Living Treasure in 2012.

He was a member of the Los Alamos Lads of Enchantment Barbershop Group and quartets for more than 25 years and enjoyed singing patriotic songs. Doug was a charter member of the HillStrummers Ukulele Group. He passed away March 26, 2016 and is interred in the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

This program is dedicated to the memory of our beloved friend, Doug Lier.
