PEEC News:

Join Paul Arendt for a winter hike in White Rock Canyon 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1.

Hikers will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the bottom of Piedra Loop where hikers park for the Red Dot Trail and car pool to a parking area three miles south of White Rock.

From this second parking area, the hike will proceed eastward – eventually dropping into Ancho Canyon. Hikers will proceed along Ancho Canyon until its terminus at Ancho Rapids in the Rio Grande.

There will be some interesting rock formations to observe in the lower portions of Ancho Canyon, as well as in the White Rock Canyon.

Hikers will stop at Ancho Rapids for a rest break and an early lunch before proceeding north along our route, which parallels the Rio.

Binoculars are recommended, as hikers will have opportunities to observe waterfowl at several viewpoints above the Rio. Another rest stop will take place at the waterfall near the bottom of the Red Dot Trail.

The group will then proceed up the Red Dot trail to the cars parked at the trailhead where the hike will finish.

Total hike time ~ 5.5 hours; 7 miles. Moderate difficulty. Bring water and lunch.
