LAPS News:

The School Board met Thursday, June 23 in the School Board room and via Zoom.

Vice President Christine Bernstein led the meeting in the absence of Board President Melanie Colgan.

Michael Sharp, of Research and Polling, Inc., provided an update on redistricting, which is required every ten years. He stressed that this is redrawing board member districts, not attendance boundaries. Sharp noted that he had received several comments from board members on the six plans that were initially proposed, including that at least one elementary school should be represented in each district and that future growth and housing developments should be considered.

The board did agree that the focus should be on the three options which include one elementary school per district.

The next steps in the process will include public feedback, after which the school board will adopt a new redistricting plan. The revised districts will need to be approved by the school board by Dec. 31.

Board members next approved the 2022-2023 School Board meeting calendar which may be viewed here Several meetings are planned to be held at school sites, something that has not occurred over the past two years. Technology improvements will make it possible for the school sites to host meetings in person and on Zoom the same as when meetings are held in the School Boardroom.

The board then decided to make minor changes to the section of the Open Meeting Act Notice Resolution referring to special meetings, and include the updated version as part of the consent agenda at the next meeting. This was followed by a discussion to refine school board goals which had first been presented at the last meeting by Superintendent Dr. Jose Delfin, and preliminary talks on refining and refreshing the district’s strategic plan. Each board member was assigned two focus areas to review.

“This gets us thinking about these things,” Bernstein said.

School board members will be attending a retreat later in July, which will focus on updating the strategic plan.

Board members present decided to postpone the discussion on the superintendent evaluation until all members are able to be present.

The board agreed to cancel the meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 12. The next School Board meeting is 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 28 in the School Boardroom.
