Highlights From Aug. 25 Los Alamos School Board Meeting

LAPS News:

Members of the LAPS School Board met for a regular meeting in the School Board Room Thursday, Aug. 25 in the School Board room.

Meeting Synopsis:

…LAPS Superintendent Jose Delfin shared photos from the first day of school, open houses and the first varsity football game, saying that LAPS is off to a great start for the 2022-2023 school year;

…Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Guy gave a COVID update, noting that a new COVID toolkit was released by the New Mexico Public Education Department that day. She pointed out that masks and sanitizers are available, and that there is an air purifier in every classroom at each school site. She also shared the 2022-2023 LAPS COVID-19 Mitigation Strategy (link).; and

…Board members heard a presentation on the work of the LAPS Foundation from Executive Director Jenny McCumber. The LAPS Foundation has provided more than $95,000 in grants and scholarships to teachers and students in the past year. More than $49,000 was awarded in scholarships, including a new career technical scholarship, to graduating Los Alamos High School seniors. The foundation serves as the connection between the community and the school district, evaluating needs and investing resources to improve the quality of public education in the community.

…Grant Lichtman gave a presentation to discuss how he would facilitate the board’s review and revision of the Strategic Plan. This was followed by a discussion by the School Board on other prospects for Strategic Plan facilitators, as well as thoughts on Lichtman as a candidate. Board members deferred selecting a strategic plan facilitator to a future meeting.

The next School Board meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sep.13, in the School Boardroom and on Zoom.
