Heinrich Votes For Bill To Improve NM Workforce Programs

Sen. Martin Heinrich

U.S. SENATE News:

Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., voted to pass the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), a bipartisan bill to improve existing federal workforce development programs in New Mexico.

“It is critical now more than ever to equip New Mexicans with the tools they need to compete in today’s job market,” Heinrich said. “This bill helps update and streamline some of New Mexico’s federal workforce development programs, which means more training and education opportunities for job seekers or those looking to sharpen their skills. I’m also pleased this proposal provides assistance for tribal communities to succeed. I will continue working to ensure New Mexico families get a fair shot at getting ahead.”

Many national programs in New Mexico will benefit from this proposal, including Job Corps. Training providers for programs such as YouthBuild and Native American Programs may also receive funds. New Mexico will receive funding for adult, youth, dislocated worker, adult education and literacy and vocational rehabilitation state grants.

WIOA represents a compromise between the SKILLS Act (H.R. 803), which passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support, and the Workforce Investment Act, which passed the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee.

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act passed the Senate by a 95-3 vote and is expected to pass the House soon before going to the President to be signed into law.
