WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., and Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., both members of the Senate Democratic Hispanic Task Force, cosponsored a resolution to honor civil rights leader César E. Chávez.
“César Chávez was a fearless leader and deeply committed to improving the lives of others. He was a champion of justice, tirelessly fighting for better working conditions and fair wages, and inspired a generation of community organizers across the country,” Heinrich said.
“César Chávez’s ability to bring the plight of America’s farmworkers before the world not only resonates in the Hispanic community, but it resonates across all lines of ethnicity, race, and background. His legacy and spirit live on in New Mexico through the tireless work of those who strive to make their communities better,” he continued. “Let us continue César Chávez’s vision of service and work together toward creating a more prosperous nation filled with hope and opportunity for everyone. ¡Si Se Puede!”
The resolution reads,“Through his commitment to nonviolence, César Estrada Chávez brought dignity and respect to organized farm workers and became an inspiration to and a resource for individuals engaged in human rights struggles throughout the world.”
“In the long march of human rights, César Chávez is a towering figure,” Udall said. “On the anniversary of his birthday, we honor his compassion, sacrifice and dedication to the rights of workers and the dignity of every human being. With remarkable courage, and humility, César Chávez gave a voice to those who were so often unheard. This great American continues to inspire us, and we truly honor him when we remember that his cause endures and the promise of America moves forward.”
More than 10 states, including New Mexico, honor the life and legacy of César Chávez on March 31 of each year. In New Mexico, César Chávez Day brings communities together to celebrate and contribute to service and learning projects across the state.

Cada 31 de marzo, más de 10 estados del país, incluyendo Nuevo Mexico, honran la vida y legado de César Chávez. En Nuevo Mexico, el Día de César Chávez une a comunidades para celebrar y contribuir a proyectos de servicio comunitario y educación a través del estado.
