Heinrich Statement on Republicans’ Refusal to Extend Emergency Unemployment Benefits

U.S. SENATE News:

WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-NM, issued the following statement after Senate Republicans again refused to advance S. 1845, the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act, a bill that would extend federal emergency unemployment benefits to nearly 6,000 New Mexican job-seekers:

“I’m greatly disappointed that Senate Republicans continue to deny emergency unemployment benefits to more than a million Americans, including nearly 6,000 New Mexicans who are looking for work. Restoring jobless benefits helps parents put food on the table for their kids and helps keep families out of poverty. It is critical that Congress act fast and pass an extension. Doing nothing not only hurts New Mexican job-seekers, but also slows our economic recovery.”

Heinrich voted to advance the proposal, which failed a procedural vote of 55 to 43.
