Heinrich Secures Commitment From Energy Secretary To Maintain LANL’s Plutonium Mission

U.S. SENATE News:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – During a Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing Thursday on the U.S. Department of Energy’s budget and priorities, U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) secured a commitment from Secretary Rick Perry to maintain Los Alamos National Lab’s (LANL) plutonium mission into the future.

Sen. Heinrich also emphasized that safety must be the number one priority to ensure LANL’s central role in the nation’s stewardship of the nuclear weapons stockpile, nuclear non-proliferation, and homeland security.

During the hearing, Heinrich also questioned Secretary Perry on how intermittent renewable energy can be integrated into the electric power grid without disrupting reliability, highlighting Texas as the case study for success in its ability to handle high amounts of wind energy.
