Heinrich Secures Commitment From Air Force Nominee To Prioritize Fuel Spill Cleanup At Kirtland AFB

WASHINGTON, D.C. — During a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing Thursday, U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) secured a commitment from Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Installations, Environment, and Energy nominee John Henderson to prioritize the fuel spill cleanup at Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) and improve communication between regulatory agencies and stakeholders in the community.
Heinrich expressed concern about a recent loss of momentum in regards to cleanup efforts at KAFB and urged the Air Force nominee to proactively work with state regulators and other key stakeholders in Albuquerque. If confirmed, John Henderson would serve as the lead official at the Pentagon responsible for oversight and budgeting of environmental cleanup efforts at Air Force installations, like KAFB.
Testimony, a full list of witnesses, and the entire webcast of Thursday’s hearing will be available here.
