ALBUQUERQUE U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich joined volunteers and community advocates Monday for a Protect Our Health Care & Social Security Phone Bank to highlight what’s at stake in the midterm election.

Speakers at the event included Heinrich, candidate for U.S. Senate, as well as candidate for House Dist. 28 Melanie Stansbury, Chief Medical Officer at True Health New Mexico Dr. Mark Esptein and President of the New Mexico Alliance for Retired Americans Elva Santos.

“After blowing a $2 trillion hole in the deficit, Republicans are attempting to balance the budget on the backs of hard-working New Mexicans by cutting critical programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security,” Heinrich said. “New Mexicans spoke loud and clear that they want their health care protected, but Republicans are again intent on going against the will of people and repealing the ACA. Over the next two weeks, we’re focused on reaching voters in every corner of the state to ensure that doesn’t happen.”

“The choice for New Mexicans is clear,” Dr. Martin Epstein said. “As the very fabric of our communities is being deeply threatened – the health of our families and our neighbors and ourselves is under attack by Republicans’ inexcusable desire to reduce and eliminate access to health care. It is mind-boggling how they fail to see the connection between access to health coverage and to health care and a vital economy. So, together, to protect our health care, we must get out the vote. Getting out the vote will literally saves lives.”

“Some officials in Washington favor a budget that would cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid by over $1.5 trillion combined over the next 10 years,” Elva Santos said. “Senator Heinrich will fight against cuts to all of these programs and will stand with retirees throughout New Mexico to strengthen and protect Social Security. Now more than ever we need to stand with Martin and our Democratic candidates and make our voices heard.”
