Exercise Buffs Circle Ashley Pond

Since Curves has closed, the women who exercised there during early morning decided to meet for walking exercise at various places around town at 6:30 a.m. Here they are Wednesday morning circling Ashley Pond. One of the women estimated that six times around would equal one mile. Fecal or bowel incontinence is a term that describes the inability to control wind or feces. In other words passing stool or gas at the wrong place and time.

It is a common condition especially in the elderly. Many patients feel too embarrassed to discuss the symptoms with a physician. Although it might not be life threatening, it causes a significant diminution in one’s quality of life.

It is the second most common cause of placement in a nursing home in the elderly.

Los Alamos Middle School staff member Sherri Bublitz knew something was awry when she entered the office Thursday to find a staff member adorned in a pink tutu and tiara. The LAMS crew decided to show their support in color as Bublitz, center, battles breast cancer. She is doing fine and hopes to be back to work soon. Those wishing to make donations to offset medical costs can send them to the school in care of the prevention office. Los Alamos will host the annual Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s ® Saturday, Sept. 12 at East Park and Aspen Ridge Lodge, 300 E. Road.

Hundreds of residents from Los Alamos and surrounding communities are expected to participate. Pre-registration is encouraged. Visit www.alz.org to sign up or for more information.

Registration at the event begins at 9 a.m.

Nicole (Nikki) Maphis will speak on “What is Alzheimer’s Disease? The Biology Behind the Epidemic” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17 at the Bradbury Science Museum.

Many people are familiar with the clinical changes of Alzheimer’s disease, such as progressive memory loss and difficulty with writing, reading, speaking, and performing daily tasks. What people don’t see is what is happening on the inside.  

This presentation will go through the perfect storm happening inside of the brain of those with Alzheimer’s disease in a way everyone can understand.

Fibromyalgia is a physical condition that causes pain in a person’s muscle tissue and joints. The condition affects between 2 and 4 percen of the population and is seen more often in women than men. Individuals affected by fibromyalgia experience muscle stiffness and pain, headaches and difficulty sleeping.

While there are many mysteries about the causes and treatment of fibromyalgia, exercise is, more and more, becoming one of the most recommended treatment options.
