Los Alamos County Summer Concert Series at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug.15, is at Del Norte Credit Union, 1000 Trinity Dr. We’re calling the evening “Co-op Night” and we thank DNCU, Zia Credit Union, LA Schools Credit Union, LA Co-op Market and the Espanola Community Market for their support of the Series and support of our town.

Friday’s concert is free of charge, thanks to our sponsors. Bring your own chairs.

The music Friday will be by the great Guy Forsyth and his new band, the Hot Nut Riveters from Austin, Texas. Guy was the original lead singer of the Asylum Street Spankers and he called them “Texas’ original Recession Era band.” That band played two of the most bizarre, fun and downright naughty concerts this town has ever seen.

When I found out that Guy Forsyth was leading his own roots-rock and blues band about five years ago, we booked that outstanding group three different times and they were tremendous musicians and great entertainers.

This year our Forsyth Saga features his new group. This band has been labeled by the members as an alternative, Americana, blues, comedy, folk and other/ not classifiable traditional group. Their Facebook page says “… they play dirty music from a more innocent time.”

The Hot Nut Riveters remind me of the Asylum Street Spankers, the Squirrel Nut Zippers and R. Crumb’s Cheap Suit Serenaders. Forsyth says he likes a lot of different styles of music and that he “doesn’t want to not do any of them.” They are a traditional blues-pop, folk, country-grass and rock band. Very traditional indeed.

We had to make a couple of changes to the Series. On Aug. 22 we’ll be back at Ashley Pond, but with the town’s best dance band, the Los Alamos Big Band. Brothers, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington. Count Basie and other greats and include a lot of the great romantic songs of the World War II era. On August 29, we’ll be back at the Pajarito Ski Hill with New Mexico’s best country dance band, South By Southwest, featuring Michael Hearne, Jimmy Stadler and Zeke Severson.

Aug. 22 will be Los Alamos Daily Post Night and Aug. 29 will be the Ski Hill Night. Our last concert of the 2014 Series will be Sept. 5 with the Whitewater Ramble.
