COUNTY EXTENSION News:
Strength Training Program for Women and Men Ages 50 and Older
If your New Year’s resolution is to get into shape and fit – here is the opportunity you’ve been looking for.
The Strong Women and Men program is a research based strength training program for women and men 50 years of age and older.
Previously called the StrongWomen and Men Growing Stronger programs, this offering allows for both women and men to strength train in the same class.
Scientific research has demonstrated that exercise with weights (strength training) will increase strength, muscle mass, and bone density in middle-aged women and men.
Additionally, strength training improves self-confidence, sleep, vitality and reduces risk for diabetes, heart disease, depression and obesity.
Components of the program include:
- 24 classes – 12 weeks, 2 times a week, 45 minutes per class taught by a fitness professional
- 12 weekly nutrition, health and wellness related newsletters
- Availability of book lending library
- StrongWomen or Men Growing Stronger t-shirt
- All equipment provided
- Pre and post physical assessments
The next program runs Feb. 4 thru April 25. Two time options will be offered. The final option selected will be based upon registrants’ interest and availability.
The first option is 9:15-10 a.m., Mondays and Wednesdays from Feb. 4 to April 24.
The second option is 2:30-3:15 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from Feb. 5 to April 25.
Class size is 25 and the cost is $60. An optional orientation to the program will be held at the Betty Ehart Senior Center conference room at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9.
A mandatory screening will be held at the Betty Ehart Senior Center beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25. Pre-registration for the series is necessary and the registration deadline is Wednesday, Jan. 23.
This program is intended for people who have not previously participated in the Strong Women and Men program. It may be possible to repeat the class if space is available.
Registration packets can be obtained at the Los Alamos Extension Service located in the Community Building, on the website www.losalamosextension.nmsu.edu or by calling 662-2656.
