LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham was briefed on New Mexico wildfires and met with affected New Mexicans as she traveled through northern New Mexico over the past two days.
Wednesday the governor was joined by U.S. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez to survey the Cerro Pelado Fire burning in Sandoval County by helicopter before meeting with Gov. Raymond Loretto of Jemez Pueblo and federal agency officials to be briefed on the situation and firefighting efforts.
Gov. Lujan Grisham and Rep. Leger Fernandez then met with community members, elected officials and firefighters in Española to thank them for the community’s strong support for wildfire evacuees.
The governor then traveled to the wildfire evacuation shelter in Peñasco where the governor assisted World Central Kitchen volunteers in serving dinner to New Mexicans staying at the shelter and sat down with evacuees to discuss options for emergency assistance.
Thursday morning the governor made a surprise visit to Enos Garcia Elementary School to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, visiting with staff and students and expressing her gratitude for educators who continue to serve New Mexico students despite the wildfires burning in the area.
The governor concluded the day by assisting volunteers at the Old Memorial Middle School evacuation shelter in Las Vegas with serving dinner to evacuated residents of the area.
