Gov. Declares Today Texting And Driving Day Of Action

Gov. Susana Martinez

Today is the third annual day of action to stop texting and driving as part of the It Can Wait campaign.

This year, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez officially proclaimed Sept. 19 to be the “It Can Wait Day of Action” statewide. See her proclamation here:

Once again, AT&T and partner organizations are calling on New Mexico drivers to get involved today in the movement to end texting while driving, which is involved in more than 200,000 vehicle crashes each year.

New Mexico drivers are encouraged to:

  • Text “ICWNM” (stands for It Can Wait New Mexico) to 505.464.329 or visit to take the pledge to never text and drive.
  • After they pledge, people can share their commitment to friends, family, and on social media via the #ItCanWait hashtag.
  • This year, drivers also are encouraged to start using #X on social networks before getting behind the wheel of a car. This social tool lets your friends and family know that you’re about to drive and can’t respond until you safely reach your destination. You also can use #X in a text conversation or email to pause it until you arrive.

Since it started, the It Can Wait campaign has inspired more than 5 million pledges to never text and drive, and more than 1.5 million downloads of the DriveMode app that helps stop texting and driving. Celebrities like Demi Lovato also have joined us recently to spread the word: see her video.

For more information, see the It Can Wait 9/19 blog post, official website and #X info video.
