Girl Scout Troop 97 announces that Jessica Hall, Shannon Irwin, and Maia Menefee of Los Alamos have earned the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award that girls age 11-14 can earn.

To attain this award, each Cadette Girl Scout worked to complete a series of leadership challenges and an extensive service project in her community. It takes a minimum of 40 hours of preparation, planning and work to accomplish the Silver Award goals a girl sets for herself.

To earn their Silver Award, Hall, Irwin and Menefee completed a project that involved building a Little Free Library. A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share. Everyone can participate.

The new Little Free Library is at 1325 43rd St., in Los Alamos. This is the second Little Free Library to be installed in the community. Eastern area residents can join in the fun at an existing library at 1063 Piñon Loop. To learn more about Little Free Libraries, visit

“I am very proud of the girls for having accomplished the Silver Award,” Troop Leader Mary Hall said. “This award represents their commitment to complete a lasting project that will benefit our community.”

Jessica, Shannon and Maia are members of Girl Scout Troop 97, part of Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails. All three girls are ninth graders at Los Alamos High School.
