Three longtime friends from the Valley who enjoy cutting hair have launched a new barbershop at 13 Sherwood Blvd. near Smith’s Food and Drug in White Rock.

Without advance publicity, Andy Martinez, Manuel Quintana and Obed Martinez quietly began seeing customers Tuesday at their Gentelmenz Barber Salon.

“We wanted to open softy for about three weeks before we host a grand opening event for the community,” Andy told the Los Alamos Daily Post during an interview Saturday in the new salon, adding that they expect to announce the date of their grand opening event within the next couple of weeks.

Andy and Obed spoke about the ideas behind their salon.

“We wanted to create a business that offers quality haircuts in an atmosphere that is spotlessly clean and very pleasant to spend time in,” Obed said. “Every customer who comes to us receives a shampoo, top quality haircut and ends their treatment with a nice warm towel on their neck. We also use a new razor for every customer and sanitize every comb after each use.”

The owners explained that they selected a masculine style for the décor in their new business venture because their clientele is primarily male.

During Saturday’s interview, Obed cut customer Elijah White’s hair. White is a junior at Los Alamos High School.

“He did a really good job and I’m going to share good comments about this new business,” White said as he was leaving.

Gentelmenz Barber Salon is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

“These will be our hours of operation to begin with, but we will listen to our customers and if they want us to open earlier or stay open later we will be happy to accommodate them,” Obed said.
