COMMUNITY News:

More than 100 runners and walkers will begin a symbolic circuit on North Mesa, from the middle school to the stables and back, with the motto, “We walk because they walk” at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Millions of people around the world do not have water or food resources close at hand and must walk, sometimes miles a day, to bring nourishment to their families. They walk, so we walk in solidarity with them.

The 2015 CROP Hunger Walk and Turkey Trot is held each year to remember those who struggle to feed themselves or to find water. The event raises money through donations given by friends and family in support of the walkers and runners. Donations are received from the participants themselves. Monetary gifts and donations of non-perishable food are used to support those in need in Los Alamos and around the world.

Anyone wishing to participate as a runner or walker can register beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday in the cafeteria at the Los Alamos Middle School. Bring your donations of money and/or food, sign a waiver and get your 2015 t-shirt. At 2 p.m. the running and walking begins. As people return from the course, potluck food items are available for them to replenish their energy. Best predictors of their time on the course are announced. A random drawing for turkeys and pies is held, to the delight of the families attending.

At least one quarter of the funds raised at this event, as well as all of the food donated, will go to support L.A. Cares, our local food bank. Seventy-five percent will be sent to Church World Service or its designated partners, denominational relief agencies working together in the areas of the world hardest hit by hunger, poverty or natural disaster. Donors may specify the agency to receive their monetary gifts. Last year, 196 walkers and runners raised more than $14,000 at this event to alleviate world hunger.

Residents of Los Alamos and surrounding communities are encouraged to attend, participate, watch, and support these efforts on Sunday to raise money for those in need in our county and around the world.
