SANTA FE – Crews have completed the repair work on Forest Road (FR) 263 in Gallinas Canyon on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest in time for the Labor Day Holiday.
FR 263, which was closed to the public after severe damage from monsoonal flooding in 2013, is now open to traffic in time for the three-day Labor Day holiday weekend. Prior to reopening FR 263, forest personnel performed a hazard tree inspection at developed recreation sites along FR 263 to ensure public health and safety.
Funding and engineering services for the road work were provided under the Emergency Relief for Federally Owned Road (ERFO) program administered by the Federal Highway Administration (FHA).
The E.V. Long Campground next to Gallinas Creek, which also suffered flooding damage in 2013, remains closed due to remaining repairs that need to be completed and a significant number of hazard trees in the area.
Contact the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District at 505.757.6121 in Pecos or 505.425.3534 in Las Vegas for more information on access to Gallinas Canyon.
