Everyone was having a tail-wagging good time during a recent visit to LA Dog House, a dog day care facility on East Gate Drive in Los Alamos.

Owner Ruth Scott entertains between 10 and 17 dogs, from puppies to seniors, five days a week at the facility, which opened in March.

“We’re getting new clients all the time,” Scott said. “We also have a lot of regulars.”

With 1,462 sq. ft. inside and 600 outside, there’s plenty of room to romp and play.

A longtime dog owner, Scott has years of experience dealing with canines. “I read their body language,” Scott said. “Close observation and paying attention at all times is the key to handling the dogs. It’s safety first at all times.”

Everyone seemed fairly calm during the visit. All the dogs were basking in Scott’s attention. Classical music, especially geared to dogs, played in the background.

“We teach everyone to behave,” Scott said. “They all sit to get a treat.”

Instead of being lonely at home while their owners are away, dogs can socialize with each other, play, take walks and learn good behavior, Scott said.

“The dogs love to be here,” she said.

All candidates for day care are assessed to ensure social safety.  If a dog is uncomfortable engaging with a large group or indoor group activity or has aggression behaviors, they may not be acceptable to day care, Scott said.

But all is not lost! Home pet sitting is also available. Four experienced pet sitters will meet with you to work out a schedule of visits to your pet and find out what they need.

And it’s not just for dogs! Home care is available for everything from hamsters to horses, Scott said. A client can negotiate up to four visits a day. One pet sitter even does overnight stays.

Pet sitters are bonded and insured and have many years of experience caring for animals. The team members belong to Pet Sitters International.

Bathing is another service offered by LA Dog House. A professional-size stainless steel tub at waist height makes bathing easy. The staff will bath your dog or you can do it yourself for a reduced fee. Shampoo and towels are provided.

An upcoming special event at LA Dog House is the Holiday Photo Shoot with photographer Keith Lindsay. Props and backdrops will be provided. Either dogs or cats are welcome to bring their owners in for a holiday photo on Saturday, Nov. 14.  LA Dog House is at 127 East Gate Dr., Suite 44.
