NPS News:

WATROUS — Join Fort Union National Monument for a guided walking tour of the historic fort by full moonlight Saturday, Aug. 13.

The haunting remnants of the once great fort are especially evocative in the subdued atmosphere of moonlight. A park ranger will be sharing with the audience the history of the fort and its people as well as astronomical observations about the night sky overhead.

This program will not include the use of telescopes.

Park gates open at 7:30 p.m. for those interested in a twilight picnic. The guided tour will begin 9 p.m. and finish by 11 p.m. at the visitor center. Bring water, good walking shoes and a light jacket.

If the weather appears dubious or rainy that evening, call the park at 505.425.8025, ext. 0 to verify that the program will be occurring before driving out to the park.

Fort Union National Monument is west of Watrous. Take exit 366 off I-25 and follow N.M. 161, eight miles west to the Monument. For more information visit www.nps.gov/foun or by contacting the park at 505.425.8025
