LAVC News:Los Amigos de Valles Caldera’s Holiday Tree forest restoration project has been so successful that we needed to cut more trees!
Unfortunately, we ran out of trees last weekend (we apologize to those who drove up and couldn’t get a tree), and we were only able to cut 40 more for this week. Snow in the restoration area has prevented further cutting, so this week, ending Dec. 11, will be our last week at the Valle Grande Staging Area, off Hwy 4 between mile marker 39 and 40.
The trees are mostly White Fir of varying sizes from about 4 feet to 18 feet. Suggested donations are $15, $30 and $45.
Trees will be available by credit card only during the week through the bookstore at the Entrance Station. Los Amigos volunteers will be offering the trees 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 10 and Sunday Dec. 11 and will accept cash or checks.
We will be offering coupons for 10 percent off of purchases at the Bookstore for anyone getting a tree. If you were unable to get a tree last weekend, please email nwells9@gmail.com and we will mail you a discount coupon.
This is part of our helping the Valles Caldera National Preserve to thin overgrown forested areas to protect it from further large wildfires. We hope you will be able to come out and choose a tree for you and your family. Please check road conditions before traveling. We want you to be safe!

Los Amigos de Valles Caldera is the official Friends Group of the Valles Caldera National Preserve. Los Amigos has been working for 10 years to preserve and restore the natural wonder of one of North America’s largest calderas (extinct volcanic basins) with its unspoiled vistas, lush forests, meadow streams, and the sights and sounds of abundant wildlife. To date we have raised over $1.5 million in restoration funds and completed six riparian and wetland restoration projects on the Pre-serve.
