FOSCA: Helping Keep Families And Pets Together

FOSCA News:

Sometimes families face the agonizing choice between euthanasia of a beloved pet or surrendering their pet to a shelter due to unforeseen circumstances.

A primary mission of Friends of Shelter and Companion Animals (FOSCA) is to reduce the number of families that face such a choice through our support programs.

When an unexpected illness or injury results in an unaffordable veterinary bill, our partner vets will contact FOS with a request for financial assistance for the family. The request is evaluated by FOSCA board members who screen these requests and approve the use of funds from the FOSCA Catastrophic Medical Care Program. The amount of financial support is determined using a sliding scale formula, and funds are provided directly to the veterinarian.

FOSCA has long been a strong advocate of spaying and neutering companion animals, and provides support for a number of spay/neuter initiatives in Los Alamos and Northern New Mexico.  FOSCA supplies partner veterinarians with vouchers that allow a client to have their cat or dog fixed for a minimal co-pay.

Occasionally, FOSCA will sponsor a mobile spay/neuter clinic in under-served locations. Through its grant program, FOSCA also supports the spay/neuter efforts of partner rescue organizations such as Felines and Friends and Dew Paws.  Through these programs, FOSCA funds spay/neuter surgeries for about 500 pets each year.

When an owner, perplexed by their pet’s behavior, reaches out for help, FOSCA is often able to provide advice and support for common issues. Experienced volunteers donate their time and knowledge to help understand and possibly correct behavior issues, or refer pet parents to qualified trainers, behaviorists and/or veterinarians for issues requiring a professional level of expertise.

FOSCA prides itself on going “the extra mile” to keep pets healthy and with their owners so we provide everything from cost-sharing to providing advice and even, on occasion, offering short-term fostering.
