WATROUS ― Fort Union National Monument announces its annual Fort Union Days Event is June 15-17.
Friday June 15, the Friends of Fort Union will host the “Martinez” Family Heritage Day. A Reception/Registration is June 14 at 116 Bridge St., in Las Vegas and the “Martinez” symposium June 15 at Ilfield Auditorium.

The event weekend at Fort Union is FREE to the public and runs 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday. The event includes guest speakers emphasizing the African American experience in the West.
This year, programs and activities will include a Navajo Dance group and Jicarilla Apache Dance group Saturday, a 19th-century military encampment, musket demonstrations, artillery demonstrations and programs about the Jicarilla Apaches and the Buffalo Soldiers. There also will be a children’s tent area featuring hands-on activities for kids. Food will be available on site courtesy of Charlies Bakery of Las Vegas.
To visit the monument, take Exit 366 off I-25 at Watrous, onto State Hwy. 161, 8 miles. Park hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
