Former Los Alamos Police Cmdr. Scott Mills has died after being struck by a truck in an off-duty crash.

Mills, 51, was a police sergeant for the Ouray Police Department in southwestern Colorado. He was driving his motorcycle when a truck struck and killed him on U.S. 550 between Ouray and Ridgway, according to reports by the Colorado Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Management.

The state patrol reports that Mills was traveling eastbound on U.S. 550 and slowed to make a left turn when he was hit from behind by a 2003 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck.  The 78-year-old driver of the truck was not injured, according to reports.

“It is with great sadness to announce that we have lost one of our own today,” the City of Ouray posted on Facebook. “We extend our condolences to his family and to our City family.”

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the crash.
