First Hummingbirds of Spring Spotted on Nickel Street Are Broad-Tailed Hummers

Many bird experts from Los Alamos have contacted the Los Alamos Daily Post to say that the first visitor of the year photographed on Nickel Street Wednesday evening is actually a Broad-Tailed Humming Bird rather than a Ruby-throated Hummingbird Bird. Ruby-throated Hummingbird Birds have a distinctive notched tail and make no noise when flying. A Broad-Tail is the only hummer that ‘whistles’ when in flight. Los Alamos is too far West for the Ruby-throated. Photo by Daniel Seitz
