A fire broke out around 9:40 p.m., Wednesday night in a vacant building on Riverside Drive in Espanola, gutting a former laundromat. The Espanola Fire Department reports that no one was injured in the fire, whch quickly consumed the interior and roof of the cinderblock structure between the Santa Claran casino and vacant Arrow Motel.
Espanola police and firefighters arrived on the scene within minutes of the first 911 call. Teresa Martinez with the Espanola Fire Department took control of the incident. By the end of the night, more than 18 fire trucks and nearly 40 firefighters were on site, with units arriving from fire departments around the region including Santa Clara, Chimayo, La Mesilla and other locations.
The fire was extinguished before midnight with mop up work taking several more hours. By morning the site was no longer smoking … only the cinderblock walls of the old building remain standing.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
