The Los Alamos County community disposes of approximately 15,000 tons of trash each year. Out of all the trash sent to the landfill, there are many valuable treasures and trinkets, decorations, hamster cages, BBQ grills, and exercise equipment to name a few.
Los Alamos County employees noticed a unique opportunity to create a center where these valuable items could be rescued from being forever encapsulated in a landfill and give them a new home.
Establishing a Reuse Center at White Rock Overlook Collection Center will provide the community with a place to take unwanted, but still usable items. To make this project a reality, LAC employees will repurpose a portable shed that was used at the Eco Station and locate it at the Overlook Collection Center.
This project will give life to otherwise discarded items and will also reduce the environmental impact. Reusing items results in less waste shipped to the landfill, and less resources needed to manufacture new items. When completed, the Reuse Center will accept gently used items that are in relatively good condition and good working order. Clothes will not be accepted.
This project was funded in part by New Mexico Clean and Beautiful and will be completed by June 30, 2023. Stay tuned for more information about the grand opening of the Reuse Center and further information. Residents are encouraged to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
