UCLA News:
The Unitarian Church of Los Alamos concludes its annual “Summer Blockbusters” series this weekend with a viewing of the film Fences at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26 followed by a sermon on the movie’s themes at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 27.
A 2016 Best Picture nominee, Fences is based on August Wilson’s 1987 Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning play, and tells the story of Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington), who makes his living as a sanitation worker in 1950s Pittsburgh. Maxson once dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, but was deemed too old when the major leagues began admitting black athletes. Bitter over his missed opportunity, Troy creates tension in his family when he cheats on his wife, Rose (Viola Davis), and squashes his son’s chance to meet a college football recruiter.
To reserve dinner at 6 p.m. before the movie, email revjohn@uulosalamos.org or visit facebook.com/uulosalamos for details.
The church’s annual “Summer Blockbusters” series focuses on themes in recent movies that shine a light on the principles and values of the Unitarian Universalist faith tradition.
The church is at 1738 N. Sage St. and the office telephone is 505.662.2346.
