Feathered Foursome Spotted In La Senda Tree Are Likely Great Horned Owlets

Many readers have asked which type these four baby owls are, spotted recently in trees in the backyard of a home in the La Senda neighborhood in White Rock. Pajarito Environmental Education Center bird expert David Yeamans explains that their posture, size and small head/body ratio are suggestive of a large owl. ‘The ear tufts are nearly positive for great horned, which is common and abundant for owls here. All that plus the look of the facial disk makes me believe they are great horned owlets, not spotted, barred or screech,’ Yeamans said. Photo by Heath and Alison Watkins
