FBI: Mescalero Apache Man Sentenced For Assaulting Federal Officer

ALBUQUERQUE – Ryan Joseph Chavez, 40, an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Nation who resides in Mescalero, N.M., was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Las Cruces to eight months in prison followed by one year of supervised release for assaulting a federal officer. 

Chavez was arrested Oct. 16, 2015, on a criminal complaint charging him with assaulting a Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) officer May 6, 2015, in Otero County. According to the complaint, Chavez assaulted the officer while the officer was attempting to place Chavez under arrest.

Feb. 9, 2016, Chavez pled guilty to a felony information charging him with assaulting a federal officer who was engaged in the performance of his official duties. The guilty plea was entered without the benefit of a plea agreement.

This case was investigated by the Las Cruces office of the FBI and the Mescalero Agency of the BIA’s Office of Justice Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron O. Jordan of the U.S. Attorney’s Las Cruces Branch Office prosecuted the case.
