It wasn’t the Fourth of July, but there were plenty of fireworks and it wasn’t track season, but there was a lot of running.
Friday night the 22nd-ranked Toppers faced the 8th-ranked Farmington Scorpions at Sullivan Field and when the smoke from the green chile cheeseburgers cleared, the Scorpions got into their bus for the long ride home with a 65-26 victory.
The game had an unusual 6 p.m. start to accommodate the Scorpions long ride back to Farmington.
Combined yardage from both teams was nearly 1,100 yards! The Topper’s gained over 430 yards of total offense, but the Scorpions had over 640 years of total offense gaining 20 yards or more on 13 plays..
The Toppers matched an early Scorpion 2-play 80-yard touchdown “drive” with a 7-play, 64-yard drive capped with a touchdown pass from junior quarterback Nicholas Quartieri to senior wide receiver John Meyer making to score 6-6 at the end of the first quarter.
However, the Scorpions scored four touchdowns in the first 7 minutes of the second quarter to lead 34-6. The Toppers fought back with an 8-play drive ending with a left-handed pass from senior running back Lane Saunders to senior wide receiver Kobe Kotter for a 43-year score. However, the Scorpions ran the subsequent kick-off back 65 yards for a score making the score 41-12 at halftime.
A pass interception by Kotter turned back the initial Scorpion drive of the second half. The Toppers lost the ball on a fumble on a 45-year drive following the interception. Three plays later the Scorpions scored on a 37-yard up the middle. The Toppers responded with a 9-play, 69-yard drive culminating on a 14-yard touchdown run by senior fullback Derek Selvage. That made the score 47-18 at the start of the fourth quarter.
The Scorpions recovered the on-side kick and went 54-yards in four plays making the score 53-18. After the Farmington kickoff the Toppers started on their own 17-yard line and scored in three plays on Selvage’s 75-yard run up the middle behind great blocking by the Topper offensive line. The Toppers tried an onside kick but it was picked up by a Scorpions and returned 50 years for a touchdown making the score 59-26. The Scorpions ended scoring with a 7-play, 78-yard drive after they stopped the Toppers on fourth down.
