Fallen Tree Causes Small Fire On West Road

Los Alamos Fire Department responded to a small fire at around 2:30 p.m. Sunday on West Road, which burned about a 10th of an acre. The fire was caused by a tree that fell on a powerline. Pajarito Mountain Ski Area experienced a power outage as a result of the fallen tree and about a dozen skiers were evacuated from a lift. Deputy Chief Steve DeWald said having a grass fire in January is quite unusual but that the area is more susceptible to these types of incidents due to lack of moisture. He said an early fire season is likely if some significant moisture does not come soon and that even if it does, it may not have a big impact on the number of fires the Department will respond to.
