Explore the risks asteroid impacts pose to the Earth this Friday and Saturday at the Los Alamos Nature Center’s planetarium. At 6 p.m., Friday, May 24 astronomer Galen Gisler will host a talk about the effects of asteroid impacts and what mankind might be able to do to mitigate it.
Additionally, the nature center will show the full-dome film “Incoming!” at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 25.
Asteroids have struck Earth many times in its past history and it will be struck again in the future. Gisler is a local asteroid expert who spent much of his career at Los Alamos National Laboratory working on ways to defend the Earth against asteroid impacts. At his talk, he will discuss the risks asteroids pose to Earth, the nature of this hazard and what we might be able to do about them.
The full-dome film “Incoming!” explores asteroids, comets and the hard-hitting stories of our cosmic origins. The film is narrated by George Takei and takes viewers on a journey back in time across the Solar System, following the paths of asteroids and comets that have collided with Earth — and those that roam far from home. Expand your knowledge of asteroids by attending one or both of these events!
Seating is limited for both of this talk and movie, so please call the nature center at 505.662.0460 or stop by to reserve your tickets. Admission for both programs is $6 for adults and $4 for children. Events in the planetarium are not recommended for children under age 4.
