As I was swimming 62 laps to celebrate my 62nd birthday recently, I was stopped suddenly by Kathy the lifeguard who began to serenade me with “Las Mañanitas”, a Spanish birthday song. It brought back memories of a few weeks ago when I heard Kathy singing it to fellow swimmer Evelyn Campbell.
When I asked Evelyn how old she was (I was thinking about 80) she said she was 90! I dedicate this birthday and rendition of Las Mañanitas to Evelyn, who learned how to swim at the tender age of 87 from Sue Henninger, a formidable athlete and superb teacher (formerly of Los Alamos Public Schools).
