The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) will safely reopen to the public today, March 17, following a temporary closure last month due to positive COVID-19 cases reported by staff members.

Museum hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday, and visitation will be limited to 75 people at any one time.

Santa Fe — Sunday, House Bill 157, the Mining Act Forfeiture Fund, an Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) priority bill, passed the New Mexico Senate unanimously.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Nathan Small and sponsored on the Senate Floor by Sen. Siah Correa Hemphill, explicitly gives the state authorization to create a fund to receive and manage financial assurance to pay for long-term reclamation in the rare case that a mine operator defaults.

A bill that would allow the state of New Mexico to adopt air quality and hazardous waste rules more stringent than federal regulations survived a challenge Friday from Senate Republicans, who had previously stalled the measure with a procedural maneuver that kept it in limbo for days.
