The New Mexico Wildlife Center invites the public to its annual Open House 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 7-8 at 19 Wheat St. in Espanola.

Activities include:

  • Live Animal Demonstrations;
  • Owl Pellet Dissection and Kids’ Art Activities;
  • Tour the Rehabilitation Hospital Unit (free if you bring a wish list item*);
  • Silent Auction;
  • New Displays and Photo Opportunities; and
  • Refreshments.

There is much to appreciate along the roadsides of Northern New Mexico this time of year. Because we’ve had some good rainfall, there is an abundance of wild flowers blooming along the road.

On a recent drive to Tres Piedras the roadside was filled with beautiful purple asters and colorful Gaillardia, also known as blanket flowers. The chamisa is blooming and the combination of purples, reds and yellows make for a dazzling display along the roadside.

Wildfire Mitigation Project Public Meeting Sept. 20

Los Alamos County Fire Department in coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is requesting public input on a proposed Wildfire Mitigation Project in Los Alamos County, New Mexico.

SANTA FE – National Public Lands Day on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) is Saturday, Sept. 30 and volunteers are needed to work on popular multi-use trails that need a little TLC. Or take advantage of the third fee-free day of the year to visit a favorite sites on the forest for free.

Bandelier National Monument recently welcomed their newest seasonal ranger, Colonel (RET) Bob Loy. 
 
Ranger Loy will serve as the Dorothy Hoard Wilderness Ranger at Bandelier. The position is sponsored by the Friends of Bandelier as a memorial to the founder of the organization, Dorothy Hoard, who was also instrumental in the designation of the Bandelier Wilderness.

Youth ages 6 to 10 will love exploring geology at the Los Alamos Nature Center in the Pebble Pups program, organized by the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC).
 
This program helps kids embark on a journey to learn about rocks, fossils, and local geology through active games and activities with Patrick Rowe of the Los Alamos Geological Society Denise Matthews, an experienced Pajarito Environmental Center (PEEC) Educator.
