The New Mexico Wildlife Center invites the public to its annual Open House 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 7-8 at 19 Wheat St. in Espanola.
Activities include:
- Live Animal Demonstrations;
- Owl Pellet Dissection and Kids’ Art Activities;
- Tour the Rehabilitation Hospital Unit (free if you bring a wish list item*);
- Silent Auction;
- New Displays and Photo Opportunities; and
- Refreshments.

Weekly Fishing Report Sept. 12
There is much to appreciate along the roadsides of Northern New Mexico this time of year. Because we’ve had some good rainfall, there is an abundance of wild flowers blooming along the road.
On a recent drive to Tres Piedras the roadside was filled with beautiful purple asters and colorful Gaillardia, also known as blanket flowers. The chamisa is blooming and the combination of purples, reds and yellows make for a dazzling display along the roadside.

SANTA FE – National Public Lands Day on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) is Saturday, Sept. 30 and volunteers are needed to work on popular multi-use trails that need a little TLC. Or take advantage of the third fee-free day of the year to visit a favorite sites on the forest for free.
National Public Lands Day is the largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands. Last year, more than 200,000 volunteers at 2,600 locations accomplished $18 million in public land improvements. Beeweed is nearing the end of its time to be blooming, but the ones in the Native Plant Garden behind the Banderlier National Monument Visitor Center still have some flowers. Cleome serrulata also is known as wild spinach (and lots of other names).
