Glenn J. Morgan has been named president and program manager for Newport News Nuclear BWXT-Los Alamos (N3B).

N3B manages the 10 year, $1.38 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office. N3B is responsible for cleaning up waste sites, and packaging and transporting waste off-site for permanent disposal.

PEEC is hosting two free family-friendly events Tuesday, April 9 at the Los Alamos Nature Center.
 
A PEEC educator will lead a Family Star Party at 5:30 p.m. in the planetarium and introduce kids to constellations, planets and more in an informal setting. Families also are invited to join Melissa Mackey 6-7 p.m. for Family Night to enjoy making a unique craft in the classroom.

Jemez Springs — Valles Caldera National Preserve has lifted the restriction for vehicle access from N.M. 4 to the entrance station.

Most of the snow in the Valle Grande has melted, but snow can be found on the north-sloped trails, such as South Mountain, Coyote Call and Valle Grande. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and mountain biking are permitted.

The Los Alamos Garden Club invites the public to attend a rose pruning workshop with Carlos Valdez from the County Extension Office. The workshop will take place in the Memorial Rose Garden at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 13.
 
Carlos will teach attendees how to prune, clean and care for the roses. Participants should wear long sleeve shirts and long pants. Gloves will be necessary and if you have pruners bring them. It will also be helpful if you have a bucket to put cuttings in.

Santa Fe Watershed Prescribed Burn Postponed Again; May Be Rescheduled Sometime Next Week

SANTA FE  The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) will not conduct the previously announced prescribed burn near Nichols Reservoir in the lower Santa Fe Municipal Watershed today, April 5.
 
After reviewing conditions on the ground, including recent precipitation, and forecasted weather and winds, fire managers decided to postpone the burn. Ventilation is expected to be good during the day on Friday, but low winds overnight could cause smoke to settle over the area early Saturday.

Daily Postcard: The young black bear that first began frequenting the developed area in Frijoles Canyon at Bandelier National Monument a few years ago is now grown and a mom with two cubs of her own. The park hopes she will teach her offspring the necessary wariness of humans that she learned only through several years of adverson techniques applied by diligent park rangers. The public is reminded that the survival of any wildlife, especially large wildlife like bears, in any park is largely dependent upon human visitors and park staff. SANTA FE Commissioner Stephanie Garcia Richard has signed Special Use Permit No. 2019-001 giving the Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDTC) the ability to issue permits to Trail hikers and horseback riders that will allow them to lawfully access the portions of the Trail that are on State Trust Lands.
 
The Continental Divide Trail spans over 3,000 miles in North America, with 820 miles of trail in New Mexico.
