Governor: 4th Grader Asher Dean Of Arroyo Seco Wins 2019 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Essay Contest

SANTA FE – Gov. Lujan Grisham and the Carson National Forest announced today that Asher Dean, a fourth grader from Arroyos del Norte Elementary in Arroyo Seco, as the winner of the 2019 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Essay Contest.

Hundreds of essays were submitted to the contest, for which fourth graders from around New Mexico were invited to write about why they love New Mexico’s forests and public lands in line with the theme of the 2019 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, “Delivering Enchantment!”

SANTA FE Winter-weather is here and the New Mexico Department of Transportation is ready. 
 
The NMDOT is working around the clock to monitor the roads, report road conditions, spread salt and cinder and plow snow if necessary.
 
In coordination with law enforcement, the NMDOT has some advice for drivers when traveling through unfavorable road conditions.

Santa Fe City Becomes 10th Jurisdiction To Pass Resolution Supporting Wildlife Corridors

SANTA FE The City of Santa Fe voted unanimously Oct. 30 to pass a resolution supporting the protection of wildlife corridors in the upper Rio Grande Basin, as well as supporting pending legislation to protect wildlife corridors nationwide.
 
The City becomes the 10th jurisdiction in New Mexico to support such a resolution, joining Mora, Colfax, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe County, Taos County, as well as the Town of Taos, the Village of Pecos, and the City of Española.

In a continued effort to introduce environmentally conscious practices, the Los Alamos Public Schools purposefully replace all fluorescent light bulbs with LED lights.
 
LED bulbs are considered “green” because they are more energy efficient and have a longer life than typical fluorescent bulbs, which makes them cost-efficient in the long run. 
 
The lights in Aspen Elementary’s gym were the first to be replaced. There has also been complete exterior retrofitting to LED at Los Alamos Middle School, Mesa Complex

SANTA FE Sales of Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) fuelwood permits and other Forest Service products at the Pueblo of Jemez Welcome Center, also known as the Walatowa Visitor Center, will be limited to Saturdays only for the month of November.
 
Normally, the Pueblo of Jemez Welcome Center, located at 7413 N.M. 4 on Jemez Pueblo, has a Forest Service employee onsite Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays seasonally to sell permits and provide visitors with information about the forest. Due to a staffing issue, the SFNF is able to staff the Pueblo of Jemez Welcome Center on Saturdays
