Enjoy Words and Music at Opera Guild Social

Los Alamos Opera Guild (LOAG) will host a Membership Social 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17 at Fuller Lodge. The Guilds of The Santa Fe Opera, Inc. supports the Educational and Community Programs of The Santa Fe Opera.

The event includes a lecture by Dr. William Derbyshire titled “Murder Most Foul…” The lecture will explore the prevalent theme of murder throughout operas, be they tragedies or comedies. Derbyshire holds a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in Russian and Slavic linguistics. He is a retired professor emeritus of Slavic languages at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.

Derbyshire is on the board of the Santa Fe Opera Guild and has been attending Opera for more than 55 years. He has seen more than 1,000 operatic performances in Europe and the U.S

Christina Martos, soprano,will sing some selected arias the Social, including Nedda’s Aria, (I Pagliacci), something from Tosca, and Liu’s Suicide (Turndot). Martos has been a resident of New Mexico since 2008, and most recently participated in Los Alamos Light Opera’s production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood in the role of Miss Rosa Bud.

A former Young Artist with the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program at the Washington National Opera in Washington, D.C., Martos is also a graduate of Yale University and Carnegie Mellon University. She performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony, at the 2004 Marilyn Horne Foundation Festival at Carnegie Hall, as a returning featured artist with Washington National Opera in Gianni Schicchi, and appeared as a soloist with the New World Symphony in Miami. Her repertoire consists of the lyric soprano roles such as Antonia in The Tales of Hoffman, and the Countess Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro.

The Nov. 17 Membership Social is a LAOG social event, intended primarily for new and renewing Guild members. The community is invited to attend and consider joining the Los Alamos Opera Guild, a non-profit organization. The Guild depends on donations from its membership and other sources for its work.

Basic membership is $35, or for couples, $60. All levels are partially tax deductible. This and most Guild events are free to members. There will be an opportunity to join the Guild at the event.
