ELKS News:

In March the Los Alamos Elks Lodge #2083 submitted their first grant request to the Elks National Foundation for a “Beacon Grant”.

The Beacon Grant is to be used for an Elks led, ongoing community project. This was the first year that the grant was applied for and received by the Los Alamos Lodge. A total of $1,430 was awarded to the Los Alamos Lodge by the Elks National Foundation to be used for the preparation and delivery of hot meals to the residents and staff of the Los Alamos Group Home one night every two weeks.

The Los Alamos Group Home is a 501c (3) providing housing and assistance for special needs Los Alamos residents. They operate on thin margins providing semi-independent living for these members of the community.  Many of the residents are former Los Alamos Special Olympians. The Elks are large supporters of the Los Alamos Special Olympics and the athletes involved.

“I wasn’t able to apply for the full amount,” ENF Chairman Ben Bouman said. “Time was running out on us fast to qualify for and distribute this grant. I believe it was a great success. Nothing brings people together like a kitchen and uniting toward a common goal. It really does take a village.”

The Elks look forward to receiving the same grant for this fiscal year and continuing with this project as well as others.

“It’s a great feeling to give back to the community that we all live in,” Bouman said.
