LAHS News:

Eight Los Alamos High School (LAHS) orchestra students have been accepted into the 2022 UNM Summer Music Institute for accomplished high school, collegiate and young professional musicians.

Freshman Kathleen Brodnax, sophomore Hana Raby and senior Marek Jablonski, along with juniors Violet Henderson, Caleb Langenbrunner, Yeanwoo Park, Ian Swift, and Conlan Wilds-Rivera will join students from all over the country at this summer institute, including collegiate students from the prestigious Juilliard and Curtis Schools of Music.

All students will have the chance to compete for $2,000 in prizes.

“This is a great accomplishment for these musicians,” LAHS Orchestra Teacher Michelle Rosette said. “I am proud of each and every one.”

The primary mission of the UNM Summer Music Institute (UNMSMI) is to offer young musicians masterful teaching by UNM faculty and UNMSMI guest artists who are internationally recognized performers and teachers.

The UNM Summer Music Institute is scheduled for May 29 to June 4 and provides participants with intense daily musical interaction and expert guidance from world-class faculty. According to the website, https://music.unm.edu/community/summer-music-institute/, participants will be immersed in daily chamber music rehearsals and coaching, daily instrumental masterclasses, a solo competition, student and faculty recitals, outreach events, multiple performance opportunities, and special topic lectures.

Students between the ages of 15 and 25 submitted 5-minute video performance auditions consisting of unaccompanied Bach and another significant solo. Students will reside at UNM for a week and be coached by internationally known teachers and performers.
