Council Proclaims August 'Assets Building Month'

Council proclaims the month of August 2012 as "Assets Building Month" in Los Alamos County and presents the proclamation to Assets Coordinator Bernadette Lauritzen as her son passes out cookies to Councilors and staff. The 40 Developmental Assets Program, a program of the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board, identifies 40 building blocks that help youth grow up healthy, caring and responsible. The assets are grounded in extensive research in youth development, resiliency, and prevention.

Did you know that the Monarch butterfly migrates? This small creature, with its delicate orange-and-black wings will traverse the North American continent from Mexico to Canada.

It’s a journey that spans many generations of this particular species of butterflies.

The natural world that lies just beyond your doorstep is full of fascinating facts and stories, if you just take the opportunity to step out into it.

And the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is offering a chance on Saturday, Aug. 11.

Once a Year Breakfast for School Retirees is Aug. 15

SCHOOL RETIREES News:

With the many cars, buses and pedestrians headed to the Los Alamos Public Schools by 7:50 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, a large group of school retirees will be just getting ready for their "First Day of School."

Since the 1970s, school retirees have celebrated the start of each new school year with a delightful breakfast and much camaraderie at the single yearly meeting of that organization.

Retirees will meet from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church, 3900 Trinity Dr.

LAEN News:

The public is invited to attend a free presentation by paleontologist Ralph Chapman titled, Virtualizing Dinosaurs: Problems, Strategies and Solutions, (from dinosaur bones to images and models.

The talk is hosted Jointly by LAEN  (Los Alamos Entrepreneurs’ Network) and The Hive (community hacker space.)

  • When: 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9
  • Where: The Hive, 134 State Road 4 in White Rock (just east of the Metzger’s gas station.)
