LAHS Trumpeter Finalist in Carnegie Hall Program

LAHS News:

Los Alamos High School trumpeter Aaron Bao has been accepted as a finalist in the honors band for the 2013 American High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall in New York next summer.

Last June, he was selected as a member of the National Association of Music Education National Honor Ensemble and performed at the Kennedy Center.

A senior, Bao has played trumpet since fifth grade. He successfully auditioned for all-state and Southwest Honor Band in 10th and 11th grade.

Tiger Trot Raises Nearly $10,000 for Aspen Elementary

Final results are in for Aspen Elementary School's Tiger Trot fundraiser held in October - the event raised early $10,000 for the school.
The Aspen Elementary School PTO would like to thank the local businesses who provided prizes and incentives for the top fundraising kids and staff.

First of its Kind Northern New Mexico Birth Summit Nov. 30 - Dec. 2

The Northern New Mexico Birth Summit and related events are this weekend, Nov. 30 through Dec. 2.

This first-ever event of its kind will offer a unique opportunity to explore birth and early parenting issues affecting Northern New Mexican birthing families and those who work with them from cultural, social and policy perspectives.

The public is invited to be a part of this unique experience and enjoy an inspiring and informative weekend. Be part of the change you want and hope to see.

Rotary Club Student of the Month: Marcus Gutierrez

Marcus Gutierrez, a senior at Los Alamos High School (LAHS), was honored as Rotary Student of the Month for October.  

Gutierrez is the son of Melinda and Joaquin Gutierrez and brother of Deanna and James Gutierrez.

The Rotary Club of Los Alamos selects one student each month of the school year to honor as a Student of the Month. 

In addition to high school seniors, high school juniors are now eligible for the recognition.

Self-taught African Teen Wows MIT

Kelvin Doe, 15, is an engineering whiz living in Sierra Leone who scours trash bins for spare parts, which he uses to build batteries, generators and transmitters.

Completely self-taught, Doe has created his own radio station where he broadcasts news and plays music under the moniker, DJ Focus.

Doe became the youngest person in history to be invited to the "Visiting Practitioner's Program" at MIT.
