METRIC SYSTEM News:

Los Alamos resident Linda Anderman has an ambitious plan: to produce an independent documentary about what happened to the metric system in the United States.

A discussion with a colleague near the end of last year prompted her to do some research about what had happened in the intervening years.

Photo: Jane Johnson

By Mandy Marksteiner

Jane Johnson assists Los Alamos High School Administration with truancy intervention.

“There are a number of reasons that students have unexcused absences,” Johnson said. “Some students, in the beginning, think they can get by with ditching and no one will notice or care, or they just don’t feel like going to class that day. Some students will ditch a class when they have a test coming up that they don’t feel prepared to take. They sometimes skip one class and use that time to prepare for the next class. It really becomes a serious issue when they have missed Read More

Models.Behaving.Badly: On Theories, Models, Intuition and Finance

By Emanuel Derman
Columbia University

Thursday, Aug. 23 • 12:15 p.m. • Medium Conference Room

Theories stand on their own feet, and rely on no analogies.

Models tell you what something is more or less like; theories try to tell you what something is.

Financial models are not theories; they are analogies, idealizations that always Read More
