Youth Grades 10 Through 12 Invited To Special Retreat
UCLA News:
The Unitarian Church of Los Alamos is offering a two-day, comprehensive sexuality course/retreat for youth in grades 10 through 12.
The retreat begins 7-11 p.m. Friday, April 8 and resumes 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 9. There is a $30 fee to cover food costs.
The course/retreat uses the Our Whole Lives (OWL) curriculum for grades 10 through 12. The OWL course helps high school youth gain the knowledge, life principles and skills they need to express their sexuality in life-enhancing ways. The Los Alamos School Board and Community Budget Committee invite parents and interested people from Los Alamos to attend and participate in a conversation about the draft Strategic Plan and 2016-17 LAPS budget proposal.
The first meeting, scheduled for March 15, will begin with an overview of the draft Strategic Plan followed by a review of the School Funding Formula, results from the Legislative Session, and considerations for 2016-17 budget. The Los Alamos JJAB has space available in the Youth Mental Health First Aid training taking place this weekend.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is an evidence based, nationally recognized and accredited course that teaches adults who work with youth how to identify symptoms of different types of mental illness.
As with any first aid class, there is an action plan to help a youth in crisis. Trainees learn how to assess the person for risk of harm or suicide, listen non-judgmentally, give reassurance, and encourage the person to seek professional help.

Los Alamos High School NJROTC Cadets competed at the New Mexico State JROTC championships on Friday and Saturday. The rifle teams competed at West Mesa on the state electronic target system. The Los Alamos Precision team finished first for the state championship and the sporter team finished third.
