New Mexico Public Education Department Secretary-designate Hanna Skandera was a special guest at Los Alamos Middle School for the fourth annual PI Day to celebrate the birthday of Albert Einstein.

Skandera expressed enthusiasm for the staff’s effort to celebrate math in such a fun fashion.

Los Alamos Public Schools Board Secretary Melanie McKinley accompanied Skandera on a tour of pi stations set up at LAMS. Interestingly, it was Einstein’s 134th birthday.

Pi Day also celebrates math.

Students visit 14 math stations, all of which have a specific math problem involving a pi calculation.

Hank Mullis (aka Albert Einstein) was another special guest who really brought a sense of realism to the day.

This marked Mullis’ fourth year of characterizing Einstein.

The day brings out the best in everyone, according to Clara Vigil, LAMS math department chair.

She was especially effusive about the number of parent volunteers and staff participants.

“Without the help of everyone, this event would not be possible,” Vigil said.

She offered a special thanks to many parents, who served pie to seventh and eighth grade students during lunch.

The original event began four years ago as a pie day for students and thanks to the creativity of the math department, the idea morphed into a larger math learning opportunity.
