Los Alamos is one of more than 5,200 communities planning a Relay for Life signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society this year. Organizational meetings are already being held and fundraising events are already underway. The Los Alamos event is scheduled for Aug. 18.
Saturday, March 11, Buffalo Wild Wings on Zafarano in Santa Fe, is hosting an “Eat Wings Raise Funds” event. From 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., if people present the above coupon to their server, Buffalo Wild Wings will donate 10 percent of their total bill (not including tax, gratuity, or promotional discount) to Los Alamos Relay for Life, as long as the group raises $300 in pre-tax sales during the event.
Rachal Allen and Tonya Mullins are co-coordinators for this year’s relay and the next organizational committee meeting is slated for Tuesday, March 28 in the small conference room downstairs at Los Alamos Medical Center. Volunteers are needed for everything from coordinating fundraisers, to set-up and take-down for events, to creating teams to walk.
Relay is a team fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a track or designated path. In Los Alamos, participants walk around Ashley Pond during their assigned time. Each team is asked to have a member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps. The American Cancer Society says, “Cancer patients don’t stop because they’re tired, and for one night, neither do we”. Team members raise money through sponsorships and donations from friends, family, colleagues, and local businesses.
“It’s not too soon to start organizing your team and raising funds,” Allen says.
