DOE Renews Grant To NMED

DOE News:

CARLSBAD, NM â€• The Department of Energy ‘s Carlsbad Field Office yesterday renewed a grant with New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) by extending the project period five years to June 30, 2022. The five-year renewal cost is estimated at $2 million.

Through the grant, the DOE provides funding to NMED to conduct non-regulatory environmental oversight and monitoring to evaluate activities conducted at DOE’s facilities.
NMED will evaluate the adequacy of DOE facility activities related to Waste Isolation Pilot Plant’s environmental monitoring.

WIPP is the nation’s only deep-geologic repository to isolate defense-related TRU waste from the environment. Waste temporarily stored at sites around the county is shipped to WIPP and permanently disposed in rooms mined out of an ancient salt formation 2,150 feet below the surface.
