East Jemez Road lane closures near the entrance of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) will begin Friday, April 26, and continue through the weekend. Drivers will be unable to get to Los Alamos via the truck route and should use the NM502/Main Hill Road instead.
The lane closures are necessary to allow workers to replace the main water line, which requires open trenching across East Jemez Road, between Omega Bridge and the LANL entrance.
As shown in Figure 1, one lane of traffic will be available each way on the westbound side of the road starting at 8:30 a.m., Friday, April 26. Lanes will be closed completely at approximately 6 p.m., Friday April 26 through Sunday evening.
West Road will be open for those in Los Alamos who need to get to LANL or travel to the Jemez Mountains shown in Figure 2.
Monday morning commuters should see all lanes open but will encounter steel plates covering the work area.
Construction activities include cutting of the roadway, excavation of trench, placement of the waterline pipe steel casings, welding of casings, followed by backfill and compaction and setting of steel road plates until the final asphalt will be placed the following weekend. If for any reason the work is unable to be executed due to inclement weather, the work will be pushed out to May 3, until the evening of May 5, 2019.
The water line replacement is part of a $34.5 million Supplemental Environmental Projects settlement agreement between the New Mexico Environment Department and the U.S. Department of Energy following the February 2014 drum breach incident at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad, N.M.
